Research in Motion has released a BlackBerry software package for smaller businesses, the company said on Monday.

The new package, BlackBerry Professional Software, is designed for businesses with up to 30 wireless users, as it looks to expand its reach with smaller businesses.

The package allows a business's e-mail server to transmit to the BlackBerry devices by scanning the server and suggesting a configuration.

The BlackBerry Professional Software can be installed on the same server as a company's e-mail application, such as Microsoft's Exchange or IBM's Lotus Domino server.

The Professional Software, available worldwide, costs US$499 for five users or $849 for ten.

Branching out

RIM is expanding outside its core enterprise market with flashier and more consumer-friendly BlackBerry devices.

Small businesses and consumers accounted for half of the company's new North American subscribers for the first time last quarter.

The company also launched the BlackBerry Pearl 8120 smartphone with operator O2 on Monday.

The 8120 has a 2-megapixel digital camera, Wi-Fi connectivity, a memory card slot, e-mail and Web browsing features.
