Bombardier Transportation and its local partner Hartasuma Sdn Bhd have received an additional order for 52 Advanced Rapid Transit MK II rail cars in a deal worth $100 million (71 million euros).
Bombardier said Monday its share of the contract to supply 52 new trains to the Kelana Jaya Line transit system in Malaysia is valued at about 49 million euros or US$69 million.
The fully automated, driverless 29-kilometre Kelana Jaya Line which began operation in 1998 links western and eastern suburbs to Kuala Lumpur's downtown.
It was built by a Bombardier-led consortium that included SNC Lavalin, the Montreal-based engineering services giant.
The purchaser is rail operator Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad (SPNB).
Major player
The new cars will be manufactured at Bombardier Transportation plants in North America with final assembly in Malaysia through local partner, Hartasuma Sdn Bhd, which is a major player in the Malaysian rail industry.
William Spurr, president of Bombardier Transportation North America said:"Bombardier is very proud to be involved with the Kelana Jaya Line, which is the longest fully automated, driverless transit system in Asia.”
We have built a long-standing relationship with SPNB, which is key for our success in this market."
The first cars are slated for delivery in 2010.
